Lot 33: A Chinese Terracotta Head of a Lohan or Buddhist Monk
A Chinese earthenware head depicting a Lohan or Buddhist monk, fashioned from a light-colored earthenware or terracotta. The sculpture is characterized by a serene expression with downcast eyes, subtly modeled lips, and elongated earlobes. It features a bald crown and lacks an ushnisha. Traces of original polychromy are visible, including a red pigment urna between the eyebrows, black outlining the eyes and eyebrows, and a muted reddish tone on the lips. The neck terminates in a rough, circular cut, suggesting it was separated from a larger, full-body sculpture.
H: Approximately 21cm
Condition report:
Extensive surface craquelure throughout. Significant loss to original polychromy, particularly across the crown and reverse. The neck exhibits a rough, circular break where it was separated from a larger sculpture.
