Lot 230: A Chinese Bronze 'Two Dancers' Plaque, Western Han Dian Culture
A Chinese bronze ‘Two Dancers’ Plaque, attributed to the Western Han Dian Culture. This openwork sculptural plaque depicts two highly stylized human figures in dynamic, intertwined poses. The figures, with robust, angular forms and expressive, somewhat grotesque faces, appear engaged in a vigorous interaction, possibly a struggle, atop a serpentine or scroll-like base element. One figure holds a curved implement while the other’s hands are outstretched. The item exhibits a very heavy, textured, and uneven patina, predominantly mottled greenish-brown with significant bluish-green (verdigris) accretions across its surface, indicative of considerable age and environmental exposure.
