Lot 227: An Indian Brass Katar Pata Hilt, 19th/20th Century
An Indian brass katar pata hilt, elaborately cast and decorated, exhibiting a rich, aged patination. Its form tapers from a flared, open base, designed to accommodate the forearm, to an ornate finial. The upper section features a prominent, stylized zoomorphic face, reminiscent of a *kala* or guardian deity, with large eyes and a broad nose, flanked by entwined serpent (naga) motifs. This is surmounted by a textured rectangular element and a blade-like finial with serrated edges and incised foliate designs. The main body of the hilt is intricately decorated with engraved or etched mythical creatures, including winged felines and fish-like figures, interspersed with scrolling foliage and decorative bands.
