Lot 221: An Indian Pichwai Painting of Cows with Deities and Lotus Pond, 19th/20th Century
A Pichwai painting, a large, vertically oriented devotional painting on textile, framed by a dark fabric border. The intricate composition features a top panel against a dark blue, stippled ground, depicting a stylized moon face flanked by two golden palanquins. The left palanquin contains a deity figure with a musical instrument and swan-like vehicle, accompanied by the Devanagari inscription "ॐ श्री गणेशाय नमः" (Om Shri Ganeshay Namah – Salutations to Lord Ganesha). The right palanquin shows a blue-skinned Krishna with Radha, also with visible Devanagari script above. The central field, rendered in reddish-orange, showcases a group of fifteen stylized cows adorned with garlands and handprint-like markings, arranged in rows. The lower section depicts a body of water with pink lotus flowers, green pads, and small fish, bordered by a brown structure. The artwork is characterized by vibrant colors and elaborate multi-layered borders featuring floral and geometric motifs.
