Lot 219: An Indian School Jain Cosmological Diagram, 19th Century

This square-format textile art piece, attributed to the Indian School and dating to the 19th Century, depicts a Jain cosmological diagram. Executed in vibrant pigments of yellow, blue, red, brown, and white on a woven natural fiber fabric with a brownish-tan ground, the central circular diagram features a richly detailed composition of concentric rings, radiating lines, and numerous compartments. Four stylized architectural forms, reminiscent of stupas or temples, are depicted in the corners of the composition. Extensive Indic script, akin to Devanagari, is densely integrated within the diagram’s various sections.
