Lot 204: An Ottoman Illuminated Calligraphic Composition Depicting the Tughra of Sultan Süleiman the Magnificent, , Early 20th Century
An illuminated Islamic calligraphic composition depicting the Tughra of Sultan Süleiman the Magnificent (r. 1520–66). Rendered in ink and possibly gouache on paper with a uniform tan hue. The central, highly stylized script features a prominent teal-blue filled element, surrounded by intricate golden and multi-colored floral and arabesque ornamentation, all within a decorative border of red, blue, and gold. To the right of the main calligraphy, smaller script reads ‘بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم’, which translates to ‘In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’
